Bio: Julia Spencer, Speaker & Author

An accomplished speaker and author Julia Spencer tells it like it is. Whether she’s presenting a lecture to medical school students on patient-centered care or inspiring audiences with her story about adapting to blindness, Julia’s warm, direct style wins over audiences. All this helps to fulfill her mission: To inspire positive and “healthy” doctor-patient relationships. Fulfilling her mission impacts both doctors and patients throughout the nation.

Afflicted with retinitis pigmentosa, Julia is experiencing severe vision loss due to this progressive, untreatable disease. In her book, Looking Through a Keyhole, Julia chronicles her fight to remain independent as she adapts to ever-growing blindness, with help from her husband Ralph and Seeing Eye guide dog Irene.  Julia’s spirit of independence kicked in early. Born into poverty as the twelfth of 13 children, her father died when she was 2. At age 5, she embarked on her first entrepreneurial venture, selling ice-cold drinks to factory workers. At age 8, Julia sold chances to win on a punch card. (Thankfully she broke no laws since the gambling commission was not yet established!)book

A natural-born salesperson, Julia has sold an astonishing variety of products and services. Eventually, she earned her business degree from Kean University. Career highlights include Sales Branch Manager for Friden Alcatel, with a sales staff of 30 reporting to her, and National Sales Manager of Coviana, a subsidiary of Colgate-Palmolive. Throughout her successful corporate career, Julia often spoke to (and motivated) entire sales divisions. When tapped for a demanding, “turn-things-around” leadership role in a male-dominated sales organization, Julia stepped up to the task, rallied the team, and exceeded the goal.

An accomplished professional speaker, audiences embrace Julia’s warm style, inspiring story, and vibrant energy. In particular, she enjoys presenting lectures to medical students eager to learn about treating the “whole” person. Julia captivates her audience members with her heartfelt story, real-world advice, and unwavering mission to improve the doctor-patient relationship through compassion and deep awareness, which can directly impact healing and recovery.

Julia Spencer lives in Whiting, New Jersey, with her husband Ralph and guide dog Irene. A prolific writer, she arises at 5:00 every morning to prepare speeches, write chapters for her in-progress books, and address the many demands of her thriving speaking business. A certified yoga instructor, Julia teaches yoga classes. Plus she is active in her local camera club, which displays her “looking-through-a-keyhole” photographs.
